Admissions Process

The admissions process is designed to be a thoughtful exchange of information. We strive to have you gain an understanding of the Boys’ Latin School community, and we in turn will get to know both you and your son. We hope that you get to know us for all that we are - beyond our outstanding academic program and our many cocurricular offerings. We encourage you to experience our community. This web page outlines our recommended admissions process. However, do not hesitate to contact us throughout the year if your timing is different from the schedule below. Boys’ Latin embraces important values and character development to help each young man attain a personal excellence. Boys’ Latin values a diverse student population and actively seeks students without regard to race, color, national or ethnic origin, religion, condition of handicap, or other prohibited reason.

Step One: Gathering Information
Begin to get to know BL through information on our website. Then, come to Open House (details below) where we will share helpful information about the school and the admissions process. Plus, you can meet our students and speak with our faculty to discover how our program relates to your son’s interests. As well, you may gather relevant materials. Although attending an open house is not required, most applicants have found it valuable. Please join us for the:

2015 Open House
Sunday, October 18th
11:00a.m. in the Iglehart Center (South Campus)

You will be able to pick up an admissions packet, tour the campus, and visit classrooms. Upper and middle school students will have an opportunity to participate in mini-classes.  If you are not able to attend, you can request an admissions packet from the Admissions Office at 410-377-5192 or admissions@boyslatinmd.com. Please include your name, address, phone number, son’s name, and intended grade and year of entry in your e-mail. You may also apply online or click here to download our application.

We welcome boys ages 3-5 with a parent or guardian to join us for a hands-on opportunity to discover our lower school.  Space is limited, so please contact the admissions office for a reservation.

Location:  lower, middle and upper school buildings. 
These provide an additional opportunity for parents to sit in on class activities and/or tour a division of the school.  For more important dates and events, click here.

Step Two: Application
In order to measure a candidate’s qualifications, our committees review transcripts, recommendations, and results of standardized testing. Personal interviews and essays (Grades 6 -12 only) provide additional information. While there is no age cutoff for most grade levels, we are conservative about late summer and fall birthdays. For Kindergarten, candidates must be five years old by September 1 of the entry year.

Arrange this date by calling the Admissions Office as soon as possible. Parents and students (grade 3-12) should interview in the fall or winter of the year preceding the anticipated entry to Boys’ Latin.

 

Testing

Testing dates are December 5, 2015 (Grades 6-12) and January 9, 2016 (Grades prefirst-12) 9:00am-12noon.

For above test dates, the only accomodation Boys' Latin offers is extended time testing.  (I.S.E.E. scores are acceptable).

Kindergarten testing dates will be assigned to families throughout December and January.

Use the following checklist to guide you through the remainder of the application process:

Application Checklist:

  • Return the completed application with the $50 application fee to the Admissions Office. Applications are reviewed as applicants complete all the steps in the admissions process. Boys’ Latin sends notification to applicants in February of each academic year for matriculation the following September. Applications received after December 15th will be processed on a rolling admission basis.
  • Parent Release Form (K, PF, 1) or Request for Transcript (Grades 2-12) Send to your son’s school to grant permission and arrange for current grades and academic history to be sent to Boys’ Latin.

  • Common Referral Forms
    AIMS Common Referral Form (K-1) Print one copy.
    AIMS Common Referral Form (2-5) Print one copy.
    AIMS Common Referral Form (6-12) Print three copies.
  • (K-5) Send to your current teacher or (6-12) send to your son’s current English and Math teachers as well as principal or guidance counselor (or another teacher who knows your son). These forms are confidential and should be sent directly from your son’s school to Boys’ Latin School after the first marking period. They may be mailed or faxed (410-433-2571) to our Admissions office.
  •  
  • Student Essay (6-12)
    Must be handwritten and returned to the Admissions Office.
  • Independent Testing
    Send a copy of any educational or psychological evaluations.
  • Parent Statement (optional)
    Help us to get to know your son a little better.
  • Financial Aid
